Take Out the Take Out: How to Start Cooking From Home

I sat (zoomed) down with @audeatsin a self proclaimed home chef who decided that during quarantine she wanted to implement a committed schedule to cooking and eating in. Her decision was rooted in two things, all the extra time we all seemed to find in this pandemic and a want to take control in a time of chaos. She’s not alone in this decision, many people are finding the benefits of cooking at home over this social distancing period. If you’re not convinced, Urban Body Fix is here to remind you’re the power of a home cooked meal.

Less Consumption of Sugar and Processed Foods

Cooking at home will let you have more control over what you put in your meals meaning control over the amounts of sugar and processed ingredients in your recipes. Choose the best ingredients for the best you. Cooking at home also makes you more likely to add core food groups to your diet such as fruits, vegetables, and fish.

Less Calories

A recent Harvard study also found that people who cook dinner at home consume less calories daily than those who do not. This aspect of home cooking also stems from the fact that when you cook from home you have more control over your food. Portioning becomes easier when you can control the process of cooking as well. We really control so few things in life so why not your kitchen?

Social Health

Cooking in your own kitchen allows for more connections to your loved ones and family. Bonding can occur through trying a new recipe with a friend or sibling or just chatting with a member of your family as you dice onions. In addition to this familial strengthening, trying new things like cooking has been proven to improve mental health.
