Let Them Eat Cake!

My mother, a personal trainer and holistic nutritionist, believed firmly in the idea of occasionally eating cake for breakfast. Her reasoning for this unusual breakfast came from reading the contents of the sugar, dye, and starch filled cereal boxes that line the shelves of grocery stores. Homemade cakes usually have less sugar and dyes as well as fresher ingredients than the cereals people eat in the morning, so why not let them eat cake?

So many of us hold the mindset that foods fall into two categories: good and bad. Yet, with all of the abilities of food science to add preservatives and additives to make our food smell stronger, last longer, and look better, many of the foods we perceive to be good are in fact worse for us than some of the foods we perceive as bad. I am not recommending eating cake for breakfast every morning, but I do recommend that you take a look at how you classify foods. Check the ingredients and you might be surprised at just what is in your food.

Take Flintstones vitamins, for example. The first ingredient is glucose syrup. In addition to glucose syrup, added sugar, hydrochloride, and vegetable oil, Flintstones vitamins contain the infamous and mysterious ingredient, Natural Flavor. So many people incorporate vitamins into their daily regime because they are categorized on the “good” side of foods and dietary supplements, yet a cupcake that contains almost all those same ingredients would be a “bad” food. We invite you to view food holistically. Take in the big picture.

A balanced approach to diet, will allow you to ditch the labels and feel good about what you put into your body. A Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup has about the same amount of calories as an apple, but we only beat ourselves up over one of those food choices. Look more closely into the ingredients that make up your food, so that you can make educated decisions about how you fuel your body. And from time to time, you should definitely eat cake!

If you’re interested in investigating your food and dietary supplements, here are some that UBF has already approved.
