Nature and Nurture: An Ode to My Mother
My last blog post comes in the form of a thank you letter, one addressed to my most prominent and important blog inspiration, my mother. It doesn’t seem surprising to me now, but while writing the blogs, I had no idea of just how large her impact was. Many of my blogs stemmed from little notes she left me in lunch boxes or her imparted wisdoms in casual conversations. It also comes at no surprise that all of my favorite blogs embody everything she was. So in my last blog post, I’d like to think about the people who nurture us and surround us in not only our fitness and wellness journeys, but in our lives.
My mother, a holistic personal trainer and nutritionist, believed firmly in raising her children with the philosophy that one must nurture using nature. She would go to extreme lengths to explain the difference between fueling our bodies with healthy natural diets rather than ones that can sit on supermarket shelves for years. She would crack open farm raised eggs and store bought eggs to show me the difference in yolk coloring and egg white consistency. She sat next to me and coached me as I did pushups and lifted light weights to get my first serve over the net before seventh grade.
My mother was the epitome of strength. The definition of someone who was fully and unequivocally dedicated to being in my corner of the ring rooting me on. The true nature of the people we let nurture us is so important to our growth. Do not settle for people on your life’s journey that wouldn’t take the time to crack open cartons of eggs or find the Co-op grocery store in every town you visit. There’s value to learning from and growing alongside someone that has your best interest in mind.
I am beyond grateful to have been taught the wisdom of eating cake for breakfast or seeking villages for fitness journeys. I would urge everyone to sit down and think about the nurturers they surround themselves with. Sit down and write thank you letters, if only for reflection purposes, that explore the nature of the people and ideas we take into our life’s inventory.
To my mother, thank you for everything. To Urban Body Fix, thank you for this platform.
And of course, remember, have your cake and eat it too :) This cake eating, fitness village enthusiast, nostalgic, zucchini meatball loving, mindful blogger signing off.
