Get Your Beauty Sleep

Takeaways about immunity

When it comes to your body’s immune response, take into account all attributes that could impact the efficiency of your response to unwanted germs. You know from our last blog post that aspects such as diet and lifestyle have a huge effect on your body’s immune system. Sleep is another major component that affects not only your cognitive function but your immune system as well.

Sleep

Ahh, that moment your head touches the pillow and you feel a sense of welcome relief. It is the perfect time to unwind and catch some needed Zzzz’s. But are you really getting the proper amount of sleep? You may be “functioning” on six or seven hours of slumber, but are you really getting the glorious rest you need? According to the CDC, one-third of Americans do not get the recommended eight hours of sleep per night. Over time, if the body is getting more and more sleep deprived, negative effects begin to emerge. Lethargy, moodiness and sadness can creep in. Studies have linked sleep deprivation to a decreased amount of antibodies and white blood cells within the body, thus inhibiting the body’s ability to fight off disease. Replacing sleep deprivation with adequate sleep means that the body will be able to increase the effectiveness of T-cells that go after those unwanted pathogens.

How much sleep should you be getting?

The proper amount of sleep one should be getting each night is guided by your age. The breakdown below is sourced by The National Sleep Foundation.

How you can achieve optimal sleep

We aren’t saying getting the correct amount of sleep is an easy task; but one that takes effort to achieve your desired goal. You can aid in your sleep by several methods. Sleep supplements that include melatonin and magnesium can help ease your body and mind to get ready for bed. Especially during these questionable times, it can help to get that extra relaxation in before you turn down. Another method that can be used to help relax yourself is to ensure that you are exerting most of your energy throughout the day. Whether that is through an extra walk at night or a quick ab circuit, you may be able to exert that extra energy you have been holding on to.
