It’s 2020 and whole milk is no longer a universal staple in everyone’s fridges. It seems like every nut is being milked these days. Whether you have transitioned completely to non-dairy milk or are just looking for a switch up in your everyday routine; here are some pros and cons about your favorite non-dairy milk options.
Almond Milk
Almond milk has been a leader of the non-dairy milk pack for some time now. Almond milk can be found in most every grocery store. Almond milk is beneficial for heart health, because it contains no cholesterol or saturated fats. A downside of almond milk is the amount of water it takes to grow almonds. 1.1 gallons of water is used to grow 1 almond, so from an environmental perspective, almond milk is not the most eco-friendly of milks.
Rice Milk
Rice milk is an original member of the non-dairy milk gang. Rice milk has a slightly sweet flavor due to the fact that rice breaks down into sugars. Rice milk is a good option for those who have nut and soy allergies. A downside to rice milk is that it does not contain any protein compared to other non-dairy milk alternatives.
Soy Milk
Soy milk contains no lactose and very low levels of saturated fats. Soy milk contains as much protein as dairy-milk. Beward that soy milk has higher levels of sugar, and soy can be a common allergy for adults and children.
Coconut Milk
Coconut has more saturated fat than the other options listed above. Coconut milk is lower in sodium, which is beneficial for people who need a low sodium option. Coconut milk can be found in a can for a more pressed and saturated coconut milk option. You can find a thinner version of the milk in a carton.
Oat Milk
Oat milk is the newest arrival to the non-dairy milk gang. You will find a smoother texture in oat milk compared to the options above. Oat milk is lactose and soy free. In addition to its health benefits, oat milk’s impact on the environment is much lower than the options listed above. For every cup of oat milk, you are an active part in lessening the emission of greenhouse gases compared to other milks.
