Turmeric: For Health and Healing

Growing up in India, I have always learned from my elders that Turmeric plays a vital role in every Indian’s diet. Turmeric, also known as curcumin or ‘Haridra’ in Sanskrit and commonly known as ‘Haldi’ is an ancient spice, originated from Southern Asia, which is used for centuries and consumed as an edible as well as medicinal purpose. It contributes an important part to Ayurveda which is an ancient Indian system of natural healing. Turmeric has plenty of benefits for healing, health, and skin. So today I am going to share how I use turmeric in my day-to-day life.

I start my morning with Turmeric detox water, a.k.a. Turmeric ginger tea. It supports the Immune system as well as the digestive system and makes you feel fresh. I also use it as a home remedy for cold and sore throat. I take some warm water and add some lemon juice along with a pinch of turmeric, grated ginger, a drop of honey, ground black pepper, and a pinch of cumin powder. Using black pepper will activate more benefits of turmeric, increasing absorption of curcumin inside the bloodstream and aid against diabetes. Refreshing, isn’t it?

For those who may not have enough time to make one, I have a perfect solution: nutraMetrix® Curcumin Extreme™.  Curcumin Extreme is a gluten-free, soy-free, wheat-free, and dairy-free product that contains broccoli seed extract, a potent glucosinolate sulphoraphane which promotes neurological health and a strong immune system. It allows the liver to detoxify and preserve cell integrity.

My mom used to apply turmeric as a natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory when I had any wounds or cuts. It would burn for sure but also helped me heal quickly. I use it as a hack for scars and acne, especially for the face.  Here is my turmeric face mask. All you need is some yogurt, turmeric, honey, rosewater/lemon drops. I would suggest having a patch test before applying on the face.

Who doesn’t love a good latte! Well, I’m a big fan of them and occasionally treat myself to a healthy turmeric latte/Golden milk, also known as ‘Haldi Dudh in India. I take almond milk, but you can take any kind of milk, with 1tsp of turmeric powder, ½ tsp ground cinnamon, 1tbsp of honey/maple syrup, ½ tsp vanilla extract, a pinch of cardamom, and sprinkle some saffron and chopped almonds.

Lastly, the basic form of using turmeric in my day-to-day life is when I am making an Indian or Asian meal. Some of my favorites are Paneer tikka masala, lentil curry (dal), Thai curry, Spinach and potato curry, chickpea curry, tofu cashew coconut curry, and many more.
